The middle of the 17th century was the heyday of the Kolomenskoye estate. It was under Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, the father of Peter the Great, that a modest suburban patrimony turned into a real magnificent royal residence.

But it all started with a passion. The tsar was an avid lover of falconry. For this purpose, he chose the picturesque banks of the Moskva River. Not far from the neighboring village of Dyakovo, a special Falconry was set up — hunting birds were kept and trained here. Thus, Kolomenskoye became the Tsar-Hunter's favorite place of rest.

However, after the death of Alexei Mikhailovich, unfortunately, the residence gradually fell into decline. His heirs visited Kolomenskoye less and less often, and interest in it waned. Interestingly, in 1767, exactly one hundred years after the construction of the famous wooden palace began, it was dismantled due to its dilapidation. This is a historical pattern: a century of prosperity followed by a century of neglect.

The church was built on the spot where, during a hunting trip, Vasily third learned that he would have a son, Ivan (fourth) the Terrible. The temple was intended for the tsar and the royal court.

(the exact date of construction is unknown, it’s believed, that it was built around 1530)

the temple has a rare seven-tiered iconostasis. There are usually five tiers.

Perhaps, the architects are Barma and Postnik, since the layout of the church resembles their creation— St. Basil's Cathedral, which they also built.

the church was closed during the Soviet era. Now, regular worship services are held in the church.
